Instructions for Advocacy Meeting Observation Report
Objectives for this assignment:
• Describe interactions, communication styles, use of Emotional Intelligence, and ethical and legal principles within an Advocacy meeting (Student Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 5)
• Discuss the role of advocacy in the field of nursing (Student Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 7, 8)
• Examine how nurse leaders and managers can foster critical thinking among staff. (Student Learning Outcomes 2, 8)
• Utilize reflection to gain insight into the role of advocacy in nursing. ( Student Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 7)
• Summarize the process observed at the advocacy meeting attended. (Student Learning Outcomes 7, 8)
The report should be brief, no more than 2-3 pages. Please include the following information about the meeting.
• Meeting Title with the name of the Agency and the nurse or administrator conducting the meeting include the email or phone number of the person in charge of the meeting
• Mission, Vision, or Purpose of the meeting or event
• Contact person for the student and the role they have in the meeting
• Date and time of the meeting including the number of hours
• How were the decisions made in the meeting?
• What communication styles were used by the participants in the meeting? Give an example.
• Provide an example of how a member or members of the group demonstrated Emotional Intelligence (EI)
• Provide an example of how a member or members of the group demonstrated leadership skills
• Summarize the learning experience
• In at least 3 paragraphs summarize the process you observed, the agenda of the meeting, and the results of the meeting
• Identify the process of how you selected the meeting or the nurse that was chosen to shadow.
• Summarize the topics discussed in the meeting
• Identify legal and/or ethical issues considered during the individual’s or group’s decision making.
• Personal reflection
o Discuss your observations about the advocacy process. Use specific language to discuss the role of advocacy in nursing.
o Reflect on your overall impression of the event/nurse and the overall shadowing experience.
o How will your practice be influenced by this experience?
