Hello everyone;
The place of work offers the first opportunity for nurses to engage in policy evaluation. RNs and APRNs are healthcare practitioners with the authority and ability to shape current and future healthcare delivery systems. The primary responsibility of RNs and APRNs is to encourage and promote good health. RNs and APRNs have an opportunity to influence a policy review from their workplace by making sure that the policies set are effective in their workplaces (Ironside, 2015). If a policy does not encourage quality care, RNs and APRNs may refuse it by submitting a written request for it to be revised. Since nurses are aware of how the workplace operates, they can ensures that the proposed policies lead to quality care.
Taking up an internship offers another opportunity to participate in policy review. It is possible to hold office at the local, state, or federal level or run for a leadership position. Time and restricted capacity due to location can also be obstacles to running for office (Maier et al., 2017). Volunteering locally and attending group meetings are two ideas for overcoming these obstacles.
Professional associations also offer an opportunity for RNs and APRNs to actively engage in policy evaluation. RNs and APRNs may join a variety of professional organizations (Ironside, 2015). Nurses may use professional associations like the American Nurses Association, the Emergency Nurses Association, and the American Academy of Nursing for policy evaluation. Professional associations ensure that any legislation put in place is helpful and relevant to nurses. This is decided during the evaluation procedure.
Meetings with local healthcare teams to explain why it’s important for them to be active in policy development and analysis can be used to communicate the opportunities. Nurses who have no membership in state nurses association will be informed about the potential benefits of membership and how to get involved.
