Question 1
Around a third of patients with anxiety disorders do not adequately respond to available pharmacological treatments and the reasons for this are not yet fully understood. How could biomarkers be used to predict treatment response in patients who present with an anxiety disorder, and should these be used in clinical practice? Provide specific examples to support your answer.
Question 2
Epidemiological studies often report that the onset of anxiety and depression peaks during adolescence and early adulthood, with females being at greater risk than males, and that the lifetime rates of depression and anxiety disorders are higher for women than for men. This raises important questions concerning the relationship between gender and affective illness. What factors could account for such differences? Explain your reasoning and consider biological, psychological and social factors in your answer.
