4. Notice Marjane’s character development regarding heroism. What does she learn in these chapters that might change her views on heroism? How do her experiences with the concept of heroism in these chapters contrast with her views from earlier chapters?

5. In the chapter entitled “The Jewels,” note any instances of self-contradiction or hypocrisy. What is happening to characters’ ideals as matters become more dire? What do these contradictions reflect about the societal climate they inhabit?
