Chapter: “the sheep”
1. Again, notice any significant authorial choices that Satrapi makes in terms of composition, stylistic expression, and visual metaphor in these chapters. Which pages stand out in the ways they create visual meaning, and how does Satrapi use visual language to communicate a given mood or concept?
2. This section of the reading includes the last time we see the God figure that talks to Marjane in her room. Why does this figurative relationship end the way it does? What has been Marjane’s journey with the God character, and how does it reflect her own character arc?
3. Analyze pgs. 74 and 75. How do these pages interact with gender and the Middle East? What might be Satrapi’s authorial purpose in including the first three panels of pg. 75? In your opinion, on these pages, does Satrapi mostly corroborate or refute the articles we read at the beginning of the unit?
4. Notice Marjane’s character development regarding heroism. What does she learn in these chapters that might change her views on heroism? How do her experiences with the concept of heroism in these chapters contrast with her views from earlier chapters?
5. In the chapter entitled “The Jewels,” note any instances of self-contradiction or hypocrisy. What is happening to characters’ ideals as matters become more dire? What do these contradictions reflect about the societal climate they inhabit?
