Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture Risks of Media Consumption Discussion

As students learning about the effects of the mass media, you have likely started thinking differently about how society views television.  Often times, researchers look at the negative impacts that mass media might have on the population.  For example, you can read about some of the various impacts that media might have on children from the American Psychological Association link provided, including increased obesity, lower brain development, and risk of violent behavior: click https://www.apa.org/monitor/2020/04/cover-kids-screens

While it is important to understand the risks of media consumption, for this discussion, I would like for you to think in terms of the benefits that mass media might offer to society.  For your post, you should identify a positive effect of television, and how such television/media messages could actually improve our lives.

My grandma was always telling me that too much television can rot your brain. Although it seems as though the research can back up that statement, there is research that would say otherwise. An article I read, suggested that there are four areas in which television can have a positive effect on society. Those four areas are education, culture, social/interactive, and criminal exposure. Education is a given in the fact that there are so many programs on television that promote learning for all people from “Sid the Science Kid” exposing its young viewers to scientific discoveries to whole channels dedicated to walking through its older viewers with DIY projects. The positive effect of television on culture is where people can gain a better understanding of other cultures and communities around the United States to those around the world. It helps people increase tolerance and appreciation for other lifestyles different from their own. Television can bring people together for a common purpose with programs like coverage of the election to entertaining the masses with shows like the Super Bowl or World Series. The most fascinating positive effect is criminal exposure. At first glance, criminal exposure has a negative connotation to it, but it is not. Criminal exposure highlights shows such as 2020 and America’s Most Wanted that educates the public on the injustices of the world. People can come together to help solve a case or be aware of what certain crimes look like, such as human trafficking, so that they can contact the authorities to help save a life.Williams, Terri. “What Is the Positive Impact of Television? | Synonym.” Classroom.synonym.com, classroom.synonym.com/what-is-the-positive-impact-of-television-12086505.html#criminal-exposure. Jemysha one of the positive effect that TV can have is that it helps the kids learn new things. I will take me as an example, when I first got to America I didn’t know any English and my cousins told me that I would learn faster if I watch TV more often and I did, and my school also made me watch a lot of videos on the computer and did some work on it as well, because if tv I learned words that they didn’t teach in school and learned a lot of cool things like how to cook and silly DIY.
