The World Health Organization is an international health agency of the United Nations that has offices in the United States, Congo, Denmark, Egypt, India, and the Philippines (Nies & McEwen, 2019). Even though it is an organization that operates at an international level, maintaining health and wellness begins at the smallest level. The role of WHO is to direct and coordinate health efforts, set global health standards and guidelines, and help the public address public health concerns all within the United Nations system (Nies & McEwen, 2019). To keep things from reaching a global level, the WHO must make an impact locally. One of the roles of the WHO is to prevent emergencies and outbreaks while also responding to acute health emergencies (The World Health Organization, n.d.). In order to prevent outbreaks and acute health issues from growing into something reaching far and wide, the WHO must manage at the local level by providing the appropriate help, tools, and resources.

During this COVID crisis, there have been numerous hot spots in Florida within my community. Focusing on prevention, one of the greatest things we can do during the pandemic is to focus on the primary form. The WHO has helped to dispel rumors and misinformation about the vaccines, by providing scientifically backed information about the disease itself and the different vaccines. This allows people to make educated decisions on whether or not to get vaccinated. As more and more people get vaccinated, the numbers and ability to spread decreases.

According to the council of foreign relations (2021) Created in 1948, the WHO has a broad mandate to guide and coordinate international health policy. Its primary activities include developing partnerships with other global health initiatives, conducting research, setting norms, providing technical support, and monitoring health trends around the world. Today, the WHO monitors and coordinates activities concerning many health-related issues, including genetically modified foods, climate change, tobacco and drug use, and road safety. The WHO is also an arbiter of norms and best practices.

So by helping coordinate care, best practices and partnership with other global initiatives, it falls back to a local standpoint. It allows us to have local goals, local programs developed, it allows the local agencies to determine the needs and base it into the WHO recommendations.

I have seen the impact in my local community when COVID19 hit by observing the safety implementations, the local changes to public access, and the quick spread of information on infection control.
