UWW Implicit Association Test Discussion

Step 1:

Go to Project Implicit (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/index.jsp (Links to an external site.)) — you can get into the site by selecting the ‘guest’ option. After you read through the initial information and click “I wish to proceed,” the site will take you to the IATs for several different tests. You should complete at least two: you must complete the Race IAT (the Black-White IAT) and at least one other IAT of your choice.

You should also read through the rest of the materials on the Project Implicit website — the “Education” tab has a lot of useful information about the project, and the FAQ has good information about the research behind it.

Step 2: Answer the following questions:

  • What is the difference between implicit and explicit attitudes?
  • Tell me which tests you completed.
  • Without reporting your test results(please do not report the actual results), briefly discuss how your IAT scores relate to the explicit attitudes you hold? How does the Project Implicit website discuss that relationship (see the FAQ section; it may address this)?
  • The implicit-explicit attitude discrepancy (in powerpoint attached Social cognition915C.) (a list of topics with varied discrepancies, e.g., prolife v prochoice attitudes in the PPTs), did you notice any DIFFERENCE BETWEN THE TWO TESTS (RACE IAT and another IAT of your choice) you did, regarding such attitude discrepancy? What might be the reason for such difference/lack of difference?
  • What is your overall reaction to the IAT, BASED ON THE INFORMATION from the website and the reading Can We Really Measure Implicit Bias_ Maybe Not.pdf EditEditEdit Download Can We Really Measure Implicit Bias_ Maybe Not.pdf? (note simple opinion will not qualify for full points)

Your application paper should include your responses to these questions. Or if it is easier, you can choose to provide answers to each question separately in an Q & A format. It should be within two single-spaced pages.
