What Is It to Be a Professional?
It is natural to begin with the question of what it is that makes something a profession. Philosopher David Carr has proposed five criteria that, taken together, help distinguish professions from other occupations. These criteria are as follows:
- Professions provide an important public service
- Professions require both theoretical and practical expertise – typically they require both higher level education and a period of training of “apprenticeship”
- Professions have a distinct ethical dimension that typically requires expression in a code of practice
- Professions require organization and regulation for the purposes of recruitment and discipline
- Professional practitioners require a high degree of independent judgment and action for effective practice.
