- Asymmetrical balance: the focal point is off center and balance is achieved by disparate visual means
Bilateral symmetry: the design is divided by a central axis and the pattern forms a mirror image on either half of the axis
- Radial balance: the design is circular and may appear as if organized around a central focal point
