San Diego State University Chapter 5 Language of Argument Definition Essay
OVERVIEW
As as review of the use of definition in arguments – and in preparation for the final unit of the course – you will dig a little deeper into this rhetorical move. Exercises 5B through 5F require thoughtful diligence, but Writing Assignment 9 seems, at first, a bit silly. However, academics and businesspeople invent words all the time, as does the general public whenever new slang enters public discourse. Many of you are too young to remember, but the word “google” used to be an obscure term in mathematics. Now it is a verb for seeking information online. New words, then, enter the language all the time, and I encourage you to invent your own as needed to convey ideas that are otherwise difficult to express.
