Your task here is to demonstrate your understanding of formatting as a writing tool.  HOW an author tells you a story influences your reception of it.

Kincaid makes sure her story is NOT what a reader would typically expect. Your answer needs to analysis HOW, WHERE, and WHY she does this. 

• WHAT are the unconventional formatting choices made by this author?  
• What are the EFFECTS of her unconventional choices? 

Technical details: 1)         a clear thesis:  it must name the pieces of fiction and authors, as well as contain a method of development/branches;

2)         a multi-paragraph structure:  organize your body paragraphs around your thesis promise, modeling your outline after the examples demonstrated on the document, Assignment Submission Guidelines, page 2; 

3)         well-developed body paragraphs:  10 sentences + for each paragraph is a college-level standard; this is how much space you need to PROVE your claims;

4)         well-developed introduction and conclusion paragraphs:  your introduction must contain not only a thesis, but also a hook or lead-in; your conclusion must do more than merely summarize;

5)         use of the third-person academic voice:  analysis does NOT use the individual first-person voice; instead, the 3rd person is required;

6)         textual evidence as specific support:  small integrated quotes and/or paraphrase are REQUIRED as the EVIDENCE for your claims;  

7)  5 Paragraphs are the minimum requirement for this.

Perform an Internet search to identify an instance of environmental pollution in your state. Use the example you found and the imaginary scenario provided below to complete the assignment.

Scenario: There is a concern about environmental pollution in your state or community. Because of your expertise as an environmental scientist, you have been invited to be a panelist at a town hall meeting in which you will present an overview of the issue. The audience consists of community leaders, members of the scientific community, and some local residents.

Create a 5-to 8-slide presentation (not including the title and references slides). (Microsoft®? PowerPoint®?, not pdf) with speaker notes (see below), in which you explain the problem from a scientific perspective.

Address the following in your presentation:

What are the scientific factors that are causing the issue?

How is the issue identified? Describe the data associated with the problem.

What solutions or opportunities should be explored to address the issue further?

Let’s finish this module by critiquing the liberal humanist understanding of free speech. In no more than 2 pages argue for or against adopting stronger limits on free speech. Your paper must use concepts, ideas,  arguments, and quotations from both your textbook as well as chapters 3 and 10 of Free Speech and Human Dignity. To help get you started here is a debate prompt you can either defend or argue against:

“Free speech, and particularly public hate speech, can and should be limited to respect the rights of individuals especially their right to recognition, personal safety and personality.”

• Then consider a potential critique of your argument on behalf of a reasonable critic.
• Finally, defend your argument from the critic’s objection.

300-500 words.
