WHS Emily Dickinson Poetry Stylistic Analysis Essay & Stylistic Imitation

This project will be two parts:

  • a stylistic analysis of a poet of your choice
  • a creative stylistic imitation. This should demonstrate everything you have learned throughout this unit.

Stylistic Analysis

Your project should focus on one poet. You may choose any poet. I strongly encourage you to choose a poet whose work you enjoy or admire. These may include:

  • Any poet who writes in the English language, even if they are not American.
  • A lyricist, rapper, or songwriter, as long as they demonstrate strong use of poetic devices.

For your analysis, you will describe and analyze the poet’s style. Here is what each section of your paper must include:

  • Click on the link in the Red Box to view the Project Rubrics for this project.

Introduction. Introduce the poet. Include:

  • The poet’s name.
  • Brief biographical information. Only include relevant information!
    • What time period did the poet write in?
    • Who was their intended audience?
    • Were they financially successful
as a poet in their lifetime, or was their work only appreciated after
their death? What events in their life influenced their poems?
    • What major topics and themes did the poet address?
  • Thesis statement: What are the three most prominent poetic devices the poet used, and how the poet use them to create a theme, mood, story, or point?

Body paragraphs. For each, discuss one poetic device that the poet uses repeatedly. Include:

  • The name of the poetic device.
  • 2-3 examples of the poetic device from the poet’s work.
  • Include appropriate MLA citations for the quoted examples.
  • A discussion of how the poet used this device to create their overall message.

Conclusion. Find meaning.

  • What overall effect does this poet’s work convey?
  • Zoom out: What are the aesthetic appeals of this poetry? Essentially, why is this beautiful? Also, why is this poetry important to you, or to an audience in general?

This essay should be between 2-3 pages
in length (500-750 words). Your final draft should be saved and
submitted as .doc or .pdf file. It should be in 12point font in Times
New Roman.

10% of your grade will be on grammar and mechanics. For
your essay, you must follow all academic conventions such as proper
spelling, capitalization, punctuation, paragraphing, and citations.
Write as clearly and correctly as you can. This means that 90% of your grade is based on your ideas however, you will not earn an A if you do not proofread carefully and check for errors.

Stylistic Imitation

For this portion of your unit project, you will create an original creative piece in the style of the poet you chose to analyze.

Your
work must have your own story, theme, and point. However, you will use
the same 3-4 poetic devices that you described in your essay to create a
similar overall voice and effect.

Your stylistic imitation may be completed in either poetry or prose. You may choose to write:

  • A poem
  • A prose poem
  • An essay
  • A short story

Your stylistic imitation must use at least ten examples
of poetic devices that we studied in this unit. The three devices that
you analyzed in your essay must be represented at least twice.

If you write poetry, you must compose at least twenty lines of poetry. You may divide this up over multiple poems.

If
you choose to write prose, your piece must be at least 200 words in
length. Most importantly, remember this is a culminating project for
your American Poetry Unit.

Wilkes University Belief System Generational Context Social Identity Discussion

Question #1 About YOU

To answer this first question, I want you to describe a major event that occurred during your lifetime that you think had a significant impact on you — be it on some aspect of your belief system, your politics, your faith, your physical/mental/emotional health, your proposed career path/academic major, etc. Ideally, it will be something that caused a change — an alteration to the path you had been on. Include a web link that references the event and write at least a few sentences describing how/why it impacted your life.

EXAMPLE:

One could of course choose something about the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps you’ve taken on significant additional caregiving responsibilities while juggling school, work, your social life, etc. Perhaps a story like this one resonates: https://time.com/5892535/elderly-parents-pandemic/ There are so many ways the COVID-19 pandemic has forced subtle and not-so-subtle changes to our lives. Yet, many of us can likely identify specific instances relating to it that perhaps have caused us to recalibrate our views on things like the relative value of certain technologies, the importance of face-to-face time spent with grandparents, the relative freedom that Americans generally have to travel freely across state and national boarders, the degree of trust we have in our elected or appointed leaders, and so on…

ONE of THESE types of things should be the focus of your essay. Make sense?

Question #2 about SOMEONE ELSE

This question is similar to the first — but it will require you to reach out to someone from a generation (or two) OLDER than you. Specifically, I want you to have a conversation (be it in-person, on the phone, Skype, etc.) with someone who reached adulthood before you were born. Of course, this could be with a parent, aunt/uncle, grandparent, family friend, etc.

I want you to pose the same question I gave to you above:

Ask them to describe a major event that occurred BEFORE YOU WERE BORN that they think had a significant impact on their life — be it on some aspect of their belief system, their career path, their politics, their faith, their physical/mental/emotional health, etc. Again, ideally, it will be something that caused a major change in their life — an alteration to the path they were on. Give them some time to think about it — and if done right — this can be a great conversation on many levels for both of you.

Jot down some brief notes while they are speaking… and then afterwards, find a web link that references the event they told you about. Write and submit a paragraph to relay their story (that includes the link).

Make sense?

After doing the assigned reading and watching the videos discuss your financial plan. How will you ensure your continued success? Is finishing each class you start part of this financial success? How will you balance work, life, and school-related to finances? What did you learn from the material that you will incorporate into what you are doing currently or that you found helpful? write a small paragraph of 100 words ( discussion ) and respond for this student

1- Diversity&relationships with others

I belive Diversity is one of the main things the world revolve around for example like race and ethnicity, culture. I’m a African America women that is what you would pick up from my physical appearance. You also have to be willing to learn basic awareness for cultural competence to learn the background and perspectives of others. But the is stereotypes of other races and cultural, like in the work field for the career path I choice they stereotypes is that its un normal for a women let alone a black women isn’t seen as normal and some what out of place.

2- Nick Bach

Diversity, making friendships, and making connects are all very important if you want to be sucessful. Without making connections and friendships the workplace will feel much more tense, and having a good relationship with coworkers can also improve productivity. Diversity is also very important in the workplace, and it is very important that workplaces are inclusive and accomidating for all of their employees, and will help ensure that everyone feels comfortable and has the equal treatment that they deserve.

3- Finance Discussion

I believe that I’m am really good and managing money but that doesn’t mean I have I don’t have some concerns and my finances that’s why I budget and plan out what I need to pay or save up for.At the moment I don’t have a job so what I do for money is a nonprofit work meaning I get paid that day after the job is done.I really think before I make decisions when it comes to money I honestly don’t need it I won’t buy it.I like to make a list every week to look over what I need to pay for and or buy like things for the house or things for my classes once that is sorted out I put what I want to save a side and then if my parents need anything else and then anything I might want to have it helps to sort out what need to be done then thing I may want because you should always try to treat your self.

4– Nick Bach

My financial plan is to continue paying my monthly expenses while saving money, and to keep pointless spending at a minimum. I will insure success by keeping a log of all of my expenses, and base my spending around that each month. I balance work, life, and school finances by allocating adjusting work hours around how much I need for my expenses, while still giving me enough time to do my schoolwork. I found the tips about cutting out spending that is not necessary very helpful. I often pay for small things that I do not need, and that can start to add up.
