You will be working with the OPPOSITE play you used for the designing assignment. Meaning, if you designed for What She Found There, you will be directing The Ballad of 423 and 424. And vice versa. 

Your task: create a high concept or a core concept poster for the play (look at pages 156-157 in the Cohen book). And then describe your design.

Your assignment must include all of the following:

1. A colored picture using at least 3 different colors for your poster. Blue/Black ink pens and regular lead pencils do not count as a color. Colored pencils are acceptable. It can be created using any computer software (Photoshop, etc.) if you choose to go that route.
2. The picture/poster must be on either colored construction paper or plain typing paper. The picture/poster cannot be on the back of a formerly used piece of paper.
3. The poster must have a tagline and include the title of the play.
4. A 300-400 word description (Typed, 12 font, Times, double spaced) of your poster and how you would instill this concept into your direction of the piece. Touch upon the following:
   1. What drew you to this play?
   2. Your interpretation of the theme and how it resonates with you personally.
   3. How you see the set, costumes, actors, music, lights?

Community Resources Handout

Human service professionals who work in the community may be expected to develop the skills necessary to engage in outreach, provide education to community members, assume an advocacy role, and influence policymakers. As a human service professional, connecting clients with appropriate community resources can have a profound impact on their health and quality of life. Therefore, you must be aware of the resources in your community, where to refer clients for special help, and what support systems exist in your community. Human service professionals can assume an advocacy role for disenfranchised clients whose background makes it difficult for them to utilize professional assistance; a community perspective emphasizes social change rather than merely helping people adapt to their circumstances.

Assignment Directions

For this assignment you will be creating a 1-page community handout that presents information about resources that address the needs of an at-risk population in your community. The handout can be used to educate your community, influence policymakers, advocate for additional resources, and even bring with you on an interview with a community agency.

Please be sure to address all of the following in your assignment:

• Provide a quote that captures the spirit of a community.
• Describe the community and provide an overview of the demographic statistics of population in the community.
  • Tip: You may begin with the city/town/county website to obtain this information.
• Identify an at-risk population within the community that will benefit from the community resource handout (i.e., community members of color, individuals with physical or developmental disabilities, children at low-performing schools, families of incarcerated individuals, etc.).
  • Examine three reasons as to why this population is considered at-risk (i.e., risk factors may be related to institutional or social conditions within the community, oppression, discrimination, access to care, etc.).
• Describe three specific challenges human service professionals may encounter when working with the at-risk population identified.
  • Examples include: stigma related to the helping process, resistance to receiving outside help, challenges for this population in utilizing professional assistance, lack of trust between the population and helpers, social factors within the community that are barriers in accessing care, and/or institutional or social conditions that contribute to the community problems.
  • Tip: Use the Purdue Global Library and APA in-text citations.
• Explore three local community resources that are available to the at-risk population (i.e., support groups, community health/mental health centers, community service programs, resources that address a particular basic need insecurity, etc.). Please include:
  • a brief description of the resource (1–2 sentences)
  • how clients would access the resources, and
  • a link to the resource website.
• Using your previous assignments as a basis, analyze three professional skills you possess as they relate to work of advocating for the needs of the at-risk population.

After watching the play, please answer the following questions:

1. Think of Peter Brook and the acid te.st. State what was meaningful, evocative, interesting, exciting, striking in the work.
2. Think about change.  There is always some kind of transformation in theatre. Often, its character, but not always.  Identify a change and discuss why it happens.
3. If the writer were here, what are two questions you’d ask about the work?
4. Think metaphorically.  Is it possible there are objects, characters, or images in the story which also have metaphorical, or symbolic meanings?  What are they?  Do they have things in common? Do these support or explain a theme in the story?

Helpful hints:

For Question 1: Try to pick a specific, descriptive moment from the play. I’m not interested in the analytical (yet).

For Question 2: Again, be specific. Describe how something started out and how that same thing ended up. 

For Question 3: These should be two different distinct questions. Questions like “why did you write the play?” and “did this happen to you or someone you know?” are boring and they will get a boring grade. 

For Question 4: Think of titles, change, and repeating images/phrases. There is no right or wrong here. I want you to explore your own opinion. 

Discussion Topic

In Chapter 12 you read about the human service professional’s work within communities while addressing issues and problems of individuals. It is important that you as a human service professional familiarize yourself with methods to improve your life as well as the lives of your clients who live in communities. You also read about how the external environment may affect the lives of those you work with and you. Therefore, the human service professional must also become knowledgeable of the social, political, and environmental conditions that affect their clients.

In the reading for this unit and throughout the term, you explored how you as a professional may have an impact on not only the individual client but also on the client’s community. You also read how the human service professional plays multiple roles in the community. Those roles include: advocate, educator, consultant, change agent, facilitator of indigenous support systems, facilitator of indigenous healing systems, and adviser. Because of the numerous roles of the human service professional, a systems perspective in understanding the community as a functioning unit is essential. This reading also emphasizes the importance of mobilizing community resources and influencing policymakers in one’s efforts to promote community change.

Please respond to the following:

• As a human service professional, how might you identify some of the responsibilities the professional may need in bringing about change in the community?

You’re a trader who joined a large investment bank two years ago. Pat, one of your fellow traders, is well known on the Street for being a big risk taker and a big money maker for the ?rm. Consequently, he is popular among your ?rm’s senior management. You see him at a party one night and notice that he surreptitiously used cocaine several times. Several weeks later in the of?ce, you notice that he seems exceptionally high-spirited and that his pupils are extremely dilated—you know that both are signs of drug use. You’re thinking of mentioning something about it to his managing director, Bob, when Pat makes a particularly impressive killing in the market for your ?rm’s own account. Bob jokes that he doesn’t know how Pat does it, but he doesn’t care. ‘‘However he is pulling this off, it’s great for the ?rm,’’ Bob laughs.
