For this Professional Experience, you will develop a promotional message. This can be an e-mail, letter, infographic, image, or any other relevant material that explains why students should take a professional communications course.

22A Culminating Project: Creating a Video Essay or a Podcast

General Guidelines:

Our course theme is “Misinformation and Truth.”  You will be reading different genres of texts related to our theme.  For your culminating project in this course, you will create either a video essay or a short podcast episode in which you explain to an audience (1) how they should view their relationship to “misinformation and truth” and (2) why it is important.

Consider choosing a topic that is currently a popular “myth” in your field of study. 

What are the most popular “fake news” and misinformation/disinformation surrounding the topic that has shaped the general public’s understanding?  Why would people believe in such a myth even without any scientific data or evidence?  What are your interpretations of its origin and how should people view, change, or reconsider their relationship to such a myth?  And why this “anti-misinformation” is important?

Intended Audience:

Imagine you are creating content to share with a specific audience (e.g., a group in the community, a particular demographic, or an organization) for a specific purpose. Your intended audience and purpose will shape what information you choose to include in your project and how you choose to organize and present this information. 

Message:

You have read several texts from our course readings and your own library research that relate in some way to society’s relationship to misinformation and truth.  For your final project, you will need to determine what information is most relevant to your audience and ultimately, what message you want to share with them.  What do you want to say to them about how to view and interact with misinformation, fake news, etc., and how should they find the truth?  What will be the reasons for your argument (i.e. main thesis) in this project?

Use of Texts:

For this project, you must incorporate a minimum of three texts.  At least one of these must be texts from Unit 1, and at least one must be a text you chose on your own.  Throughout your video essay or podcast, you will need to cite your sources and provide brief oral summaries of the main points from these texts that will help you convey your message.

Final Project “Showcase”:

In our last week (7/26), you will be sharing your video essay or podcast with the entire course either by uploading your video to YouTube, using Flipgrid, or upload your work to iTune and share the link.  If you have other ideas that fall outside these methods, feel free to let me know and seek my approval first before you submit your Project Proposal.  

Time:

Your final presentation, video, or podcast should be about 5 minutes long (no more than 6 minutes). 

Assignment 11: Ethical Dilemmas – What Would You Do?

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to explore and evaluate ethical issues as they relate to early childhood education.

Directions: Read the following scenarios and respond to the reflective questions pertaining to ethics. Your response should reference the code of ethics statements.

Scenario 1

Ms. K is a veteran teacher who is very popular with her students. She frequently offers students extra help after school, so it’s not uncommon to see students visiting her classroom after school. She has tutored one of her students, “Melissa,” in a variety of subjects over a two year period. During that time, Ms. K has emailed and texted “Melissa’s” cell phone using her personal email address. At first, the exchanges were very general; sometimes unrelated to school work (e.g., asking Melissa about a sick family member, or how she was getting along with friends). Recently, the student began to text her teacher about more personal feelings.

1. What possible issues/concerns might this scenario raise?
2. How could this situation become a violation of the law, the “Code” or other school /district policies?
3. In this situation, what are some potential negative consequences for the teacher, for the students and the school community?
4. What responses/actions will result in a more positive outcome and/or what proactive measures might be considered?

Scenario 2

Ms. P is a pre-k teacher. During open house she provides parents with her cell phone number to be used only in emergencies. Ms. P has students with special needs so this is often helpful since she doesn’t have a phone in her classroom. One evening, she receives a message from a parent asking if their child had left their sweater at school. Ms. P politely responds that she’d check when she returned to school. The following evening, the same parent sends a message thanking Ms. P for retrieving the child’s sweater and asks if they could meet outside of school for coffee. Ms. P agrees to meet the parent.

1. What possible issues/concerns might this scenario raise?
2. How could this situation become a violation of the law, the “Code” or other school /district policies?
3. In this situation, what are some potential negative consequences for the teacher, for the students and the school community?
4. What responses/actions will result in a more positive outcome and/or what proactive measures might be considered?

The purpose of this assignment is to identify and plan appropriate practices in early childhood literacy and mathematics.

Directions: The students will select a grade level (between Pre-K and third grade) and complete two lesson plans. 

• One lesson plan will be geared towards literacy
• One lesson plan will focus on mathematics. 

For this assignment you are going to create your own learning module. You are going to use this template attached below to design a mini-training session for your fellow teachers. The topic you are going to select is Building Social Skills. I have provided you with some introductory information on the topic to get you started. For your training each section should be filled out. Your module should include the following:

• 3 Measurable objectives (3 pts)
• 2 Videos (you can either create them yourself OR find one already created) (3 pts)
• 3 Articles (cite) (3 pts)
