Background:

In 2018, the San Diego Union Tribune published an article – Only 4 rangers patrolling 1,000-square-mile Anza-Borrego desert – which detailed the severe staffing shortages of park rangers and dispatchers as a result of recruitment and retention issues.  These rangers provide important roles to support visitors and serve as Peace Officers to keep the visitors safe.  A CA Department of Parks and Recreation spokeswoman stated,  “hiring  diverse,  qualified  and  talented  people  to  help  us  serve  our  visitors  and  take  care  of  the nation’s  largest  state  park  system  has  been  a  challenge…all  280  park  units  have  staffing  challenges.” Videos  produced  by  the  Resource  Protection  Peace  Officers  Association  –  the  union  representing  the employees  (see part  I  and part  II  of  the  videos  with  union  representatives)  have  employees  discussing some  of  the  challenges.  The  department  launched  a  new  recruitment  effort  – “Live  the  Parks  Life”  to support recruitment of state lifeguards and rangers. the marriage. Wife makes 100,000 a year. Husband makes 50,000 a year. Husband just
discovered that wife has several lovers and it will be easy to prove such.  Husband drinks six
beers every night but is otherwise dependable and sober.
Husband had a house prior to marriage that he paid $50,000.00 from his savings to
purchase five years before the marriage. At the time of the marriage, the house had
decreased in worth to $45,000.00 because he could not find time to maintain the house.  
Since marriage, husband and wife have both maintained and worked on the property and
made improvements such that it is now worth $150,000.00.
   The couple lives in a home they purchased after marriage for $200,000 but is now worth          
$300,000.00 and they owe $100,000.00 on the mortgage.
Husband had an IRA worth $100,000.00 at the time of marriage. He has made
contributions since marriage out of his paycheck and it is now worth $250,000.00.The
$150,000.00 growth represents $25,000.00 growth off the investment made by husband
prior to the marriage.
Wife had an IRA worth $100,000.00 at the time of marriage and has not made
contributions since marriage. The account has grown off the initial investment prior to
marriage and is now worth $125,000.00.  
They have no debts from the marriage other than the mortgage discussed above.
Husband had a $125,000.00 dollars student loan debt prior to marriage for which he still
owes $100,000.00.
The Judge has announced he is going to liquidate or sell all marital property

What advances in forensic science do you believe have contributed most to the criminal justice system’s effectiveness? In identifying that technology, explain how you believe it may be effectively used to improve investigations and solve crimes.

With the growing number of violent crimes committed with the use of a firearm in the United States, I believe the development of ballistics tracing should be considered among the top forensic science developments in the country. Although the first documented case of ballistics being evaluated and used for criminal investigation dates was in 1835 when a bullet recovered from a victim was linked to the bullet maker by identifying a defect in the bullet (Incognito Forensic Foundation, n.d.). The creation of magnification and continued advancement in identifying details in ballistics continued to advance the use of ballistic tracing.

The continued use of ballistics will be in high demand in future criminal investigations. With an estimate of nearly 400 million firearms in the United States and an estimated 100 lives lost daily to gun violence (Sanchez. et al., 2020), there will be a continued need for further advancement in ballistic criminologists in the United States to Identify the manufacturers, owners, and the shooters in criminal gun violence cases. Further gun control methods will help identify the gun owners and prevent gun violence as well. Gun control methods that including identification numbers and markings on all firearms and ballistics, as well as biometric controls on firearms.

The advances in forensic science that I believe have contributed most to the criminal justice system’s effectiveness is the development and progression of DNA. The analyzing of DNA has helped the criminal justice system in that it has assisted in the linking of criminals/suspects to crimes that they otherwise would not be linked or associated to. According to Mapes et al. (2015), it was difficult or virtually impossible to have a solid lead or even solve crimes that were committed in the 80’s or thereafter, as the forensic analysis of DNA was not available to law enforcement until the mid-80’s.

DNA technology provides evidence that could render a verdict of a suspect’s guilt or innocence in a criminal court case. The forensics of DNA also could improve investigations and the solving of crimes. As the field of criminal justice progresses, forensic science continues to expand and advance as new technology becomes available. The forensics of DNA can have remarkable results that can eliminate a high percentage of potential suspects and can virtually narrow down the perpetrator if handled, processed, and stored appropriately (Mapes et al., 2015, para.).
