Context

The death of the witch within the fairy tale has been interpreted by scholars like Maria Tatar as the psychological purpose of the tale. Tatar sees the silencing of the witch as an attempt to silence the “sinful parts” of the self or of society in order to restore order. Indeed, the manner in which the witch dies at the end of the Snow White tales, provides great insight into society’s need to suppress the threat posed by the witch. In a way, the happy ever after seems to be possible only after the brutal end of the witch.

In the revisions of the Snow White tale, whether it be in European texts of the 19th and 20th centuries or more recently, the poem by Anne Sexton, the fate of the evil queen/ wicked stepmother/witch at the end, offers new understanding of the role of the witch and the position of women in society. Gilbert and Gubar have argued against “the acceptance and perpetuation of female repression” as Snow White is silenced, imprisoned and displayed in the casket, awaiting marriage and maternity. Many feminist revisions of the Snow White tale have focused on the “wicked stepmother’s” role in revising this usual trajectory as a way of opposing social mores.

More recently, attempts have been made to see Snow White’s desire for the forbidden apple as being comparable to that of the evil queen’s hunger. Both Snow White and the queen have been inextricably linked, thus questioning the dichotomy between the good woman and the bad woman.

Purpose

Based on these changes in the portrayal of witches over the years, this assignment asks you to analyze the role of the witch in Grimm’s and/or Sexton’s version (or any of the others provided under readings) of Snow White and present a convincing argument about what the tale is trying to convey about witches and why.

• In a literary analysis, you are expected to present an argument regarding the tale’s theme (what is the author trying to tell the readers), and logically develop this argument with evidence (both quotations and paraphrase) from the text.
• Scholarly research is not required.
• The purpose is not to relate to the story or summarize its content, but to carefully mark specific literary devices, use evidence from the tale(s) to support your claims about those devices, and establish how such devices help the author convey their theme/message.

Goal

The goal of this assignment is to teach you to engage in critical reading in order to identify the underlying themes of literary texts, and to understand the relevance of those themes in society.

Process

• Start by identifying the main idea or theme of the Snow White tale.
• You have been reading and marking the text, but it will be helpful to re-read portions of the text to locate evidence for your claims about literary devices, which support your main idea.
• Formulate a preliminary thesis in terms of what the author is trying to convey and how they successfully manage to convey it.
• Make an outline of the claims and evidence that will be necessary for you to support your argument.
• In the introduction, you may want to set the context of the author and the writing or start with the larger context of witches and their historical portrayals before narrowing down to the author and the fairy tale. At the end of the introduction, you will need a thesis statement which makes a precise claim about what the author is trying to convey about witches and how they convey it.
• In the conclusion, you will not only touch upon your main ideas, but dwell on the larger implications of the fairy tale and its relevance.
• Mechanics: you should avoid using the first person, “I.” Instead, you can simply present your assertions/claims and they are supposed to be expressive of your opinion which derives from your analysis. You should also refer to the work throughout in the present tense.

Aquinas prefaces every discussion with a balanced consideration of the perspectives, both pro and con. He wants to understand an issue in all its complexity, and he welcomes contributions on the question from any point of view, any intellectual tradition. The underlying conviction of this methodology is that whatever is true cannot offend any other truth—in other words, all truth is one. He believes that the convictions of his faith are not irrational but are rather truths about the world that will be confirmed by intellectual progress. Religion is not threatened by the progress of science (although admittedly some religious people have forgotten this point at times, with tragic consequences).

Thomas considers two objections that argue against the existence of God:The first objection states the very serious problem about the existence of evil in this world: God is all good; God is all powerful; God is creator ex nihilo –so therefore how could there by evil in this world? How could such a God permit suffering, particularly suffering in the innocent. Surely He could do something about this (otherwise He is not all powerful) and surely He wants to alleviate this suffering (otherwise He is not all good). Why does he just let this happen? For many people this is a sufficient and insuperable difficulty to belief.

The second objection states that it is superfluous to explain things in a complicated way when we can explain things in a simple way; in other words, if science can explain the patterns and the phenomena of nature adequately, why do we need to posit a Divine Principle? For many people (then and now) this objection is enough to convince that theology is no longer necessary, as it is being replaced by the progressive discoveries of science.

Thomas responds that the existence of God can be proven in Five Ways:

Argument from Motion—Something in motion must be put in motion by another, but this line cannot go back to infinity, otherwise nothing would ever have been put into motion. Therefore we must posit the existence of an Unmoved Mover, which everybody understands to be God. This is a well-known argument, but some critics think that the argument contradicts its own basic premise: “Whatever is in motion must be put in motion by another.”

Argument from Efficient Causality—This argument is similar to the first proof because again the impossibility of going back to infinity is the consideration that forces us to conclude to the existence of a first efficient cause.oArgument from Possibility and Necessity—This is a different argument from the first two in that the language of infinity is not present. A possibility (a contingency) need not exist, and everything that is a mere possibility at some time does not exist (otherwise it would not be a mere possibility, but rather a necessity). If all there were in the world were possibilities, and there were no necessities, at one time it would have been the case that there was nothing at all. But this is absurd, because we can see now that there is something in existence. Therefore we must posit the existence of a necessary being, which is God.

Argument from Gradations—There are gradations in being, such as the hottest, the most beautiful, etc. In any genus the maximum is the cause of all else in that genus, so therefore there must be some supreme being that is the cause of the being and goodness of all lesser beings, and this we all know as God.

Argument from Design—Non-intelligent beings (beings other than human beings) all move towards their proper end as if programmed that way. In other words, there appears to be an inherent design to the natural phenomena of this world, and there cannot be design without a Designer, which we all know as God.

Notice how proofs #1 and #5 address the objections that Aquinas starts the question with – the concern about the existence of evil and the concern about the adequacy of science. Discuss this approach offered by St. Thomas: Do his arguments (any one of them) prove that a benevolent God exists despite the presence of evil, and/or that God’s existence is necessary to explain the natural phenomena that we see with our sense? Do you find his effort compelling?

Electronic Health Records and Nursing Practice

Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) is transforming the operation of the healthcare industry and has already started to minimize waste and aid advance health outcomes. Electronic health records (EHRs) are types of patient records which patient information such as a patient’s medical history, test results, treatment plan, and personal contact information (Harrington, 2017). Some advantages of EHRs include advancing positive patient results, population health, and increasing efficiency. Likely improvements in population health and health promotion include EHRs’ capability to consolidate and analyze huge amounts of patient information. According to Akhu?Zaheya et al.,(2018), EHRs could enable increased utilization of health services, better adherence to treatment, and involvement in health decisions. Additionally, another major contribution of EHRs to health promotion is the rapid dissemination of information. Besides, in the present vibrant health structures, technology plays a significant role in shaping nurse practice and education.

An advanced practice nurse can utilize EHRs to create predictive models which have the capability of generating real-time interpretations from a large patient population to predict patients’ hospital and create alerts. Nurse leaders are at the forefront in ensuring organizational strategies for recognizing risks and harms via patient assessment, surveillance activities, patient monitoring, and planning for care are attained. The use of EHR ensures accurate documentation, therefore, minimizing delays and longer hospital stays due to erroneous information (del Carmen Ortega-Navas, 2017).EHRs also complement other technological advancements such as telehealth or telenursing. Consequently, advanced practice nurses may develop easy remote diagnostic programs to enable E-health services which can significantly improve patient outcomes, especially in rural settings. Besides, advanced practice nurses may also utilize family

histories stored in EHRs to examine disease risk and provide insight into the relationship between inherited and social aspects related to patient care.

Florida Action Coalition is an approach related to health professionals developed to enhance social change and create positive health in the medical or health sector. Florida Action Coalition was designed to provide better health care services to patients by improving healthcare facilities’ improvements. Moreover, the coalition ensured that work ethics were formulated and adhered to by all stakeholders. The Florida Action Coalition mission is to facilitate change in the health care field in terms of the culture practised addressing issues such as diversity, education, practice, and collaborative leadership in the medical scope. Florida Action Coalition was established to serve several functions, which include: An advancement in telecommunication. Consequently, the upgrade would ensure that the health sector’s response team is effective and efficient in attending to patients and handling no delay. Besides, the coalition served as a means of creating and enhancing equality in the health care field. Some instances of inequality were being experienced and reported in the health care field where the stakeholders were not being treated equally. However, the coalition advocated equality in health care.

Also, the coalition aimed at ensuring that appropriate leadership is selected in the medical field in most health institutions to ensure that they are led correctly—the Florida Action Coalition aimed at ensuring that there is balance in the health workforce. Previously, there was an imbalance of force in the various departments in the healthcare facilities as some of the departments were understaffed while others had a large workforce. Nurses are faced with some challenges which hinder them from delivering quality health care services to patients. Long working hours are among the challenges the workers’ experience, making them tired and losing concentration in their work due to lack of rest and enough sleep. Workplace hazards affect the nurses because the nurses may be exposed to contagious diseases such as those caused by viruses that may indeed happen to affect their health conditions. Shortage of staff in the hospitals and other health care facilities (SAU, 2020). In addition, the number of nurses in most of the facilities is inadequate, which would lead to an increase in the nurses’ workload, which may make them overwhelmed or work under pressure, which would lead to poor performance. Nurses are among the primary stakeholders in the medical field and impact the policies (Burke, 2016). Besides, nurses are involved in policy-making by engaging in political knowledge and practices in the medical field. Nurses can vie for various leadership positions in the medical field and become part of the policymakers once they are elected. Nurses can play a role in policy-making by becoming active members of a professional nursing organization. Furthermore, organizations play a significant part in policy-making since they are considered while the policies are being made.

The importance of interprofessional collaboration cannot be stressed enough, specially, in underserved communities. The advanced practice nurse can reduce health disparities in underserved communities through interprofessional collaboration when designing evidence-based health promotion interventions. Interprofessional collaboration amongst healthcare providers has multiple benefits such as building trust among patients, families, and communities, trust facilitates the sharing of health information and care coordination, greater continuity, and adherence to care, as well as improved patient outcomes (Jadotte et al., 2019, p. 2). Collaborative healthcare teams improve access to and quality of care to underserved communities which is one way to reduce health disparities in the underserved population (Rosenthal et al., 2019, p. 70). Healthcare providers working collaborately can refer patients to one another, for example: an advanced nurse practitioner seeing a woman of childbearing age who has never been seen by an OB/GYN can refer the patient to a collaborative OB/GYN partner so the patient can have an annual pap smear. Another example of health promotion and disease prevention through interprofessional collaboration would be for an advanced practice nurse, working in primary care, who is taking care of a 50-year-old male who has never had a colon screening, can refer the patient to a gastroenterologist who is working in collaboration with the advanced practice nurse in treating the underserved community. Interprofessional healthcare providers who are collaborating can arrange to meet quarterly, or as needed, to address the needs of the communities they serve and together come up with strategies to implement evidence-based interventions tailored to the needs of the community to prevent disease and promote health.

Health and health care disparities refer to the differences in health and health care between groups that exist amongst populations, impacted by social determinants that can negatively impact subsets of the population who have systematically experienced greater socioeconomic obstacles to health It is important that advance practice nurses encourage action and facilitate accountability to reduce disparities using interventions that are effective and scalable. There are many studies the identify promising programs and interventions for reducing the burden of disease or risk factors for a specific health problem. However, to reduce health disparities require national leadership by engaging a variation in stakeholders. Interprofessional collaboration is the foundation needed for health care providers to support patient needs and reduce health disparities. Interprofessional collaborative teams that include nurses, physicians, social workers, pharmacists, and physical and occupational therapists can help healthcare organizations improve patient and family experiences, ensure good outcomes, and reduce costs (Sigmon, 2020, p. 36). Advance practice nurses can design programs through evidence-based health promotion programs such as one through service learning, which is one of the most common educational approaches. It combines community-based services with specific learning objectives and preparation. Partnerships between professions vested in health equity can address the needs of the community while enhancing the student learning experience (Thorton & Persaud, 2018, p.9). Furthermore, advance practice nurses must be prepared with foundational transformational leadership competencies to meet the challenges of leading collaboratively with other professions (Goldsberry, 2018, p. 2). For the healthcare team to create an effective design for health promotion factors such as communication, respect, task prioritization and trust must be considered. Interprofessional requires strong leadership to create collaborative public-private partnerships, risk taking to develop new patient care services that include cultural-competency training, and vision to design evidence-based health promotion interventions or programs
