A typical response to each question in the discussion prompt(s) should be a minimum of two paragraphs with each paragraph containing at least three sentences.  It is helpful to create your response within Microsoft Word to take advantage of spell check and then copy and paste it into the assignment to submit.  Points will be deducted for spelling and/or grammar errors, use of abbreviated or “texting” language and failure to adequately respond to the question/topic.

Responses to the posts of other classmates should be several sentences in length and address the information contained in the other student’s original post, as well as the concepts within the text and course material. When you respond to classmates, please be respectful of other view points and make sure that your response is thoughtful, insightful, and extends the content of the initial response.  Responses such as, “good job”, “I agree”, “I never thought of that,” etc. will not be counted as a productive response and will not receive any credit.

  1. What is nature vs. nurture? Explain. Nature vs. nurture is the relative influence of heredity and environment on a child’s development. Nature & nurture work together rather than against one another. Brain development and human behavior have a lot to do with the influences of genetics and environment. Environmental factors control hereditary characteristics. As a caregiver, we must understand and read children’s behaviors and create an environment that can meet the child’s needs and temperaments. Nature is more biological than nurture.
  2. How do nature and nurture contribute to development? Explain. Nurture is focused on peer pressures and social influences. Nature is more focused on the physical part of things. These together helps build the child’s traits. Nature and nurture contribute to development because without these two things, children won’t be able to grow and develop. From nature our genetics determine children’s behavior. Nurture is how we’re raised and what we have experienced in life.

Second person to respond to: by Mayra Gutierrez What is nature vs. nurture? Explain.According to studies, the meaning of nature vs. nurture is the influence of heredity and the environment. A child’s development can be affected by their surroundings. They were seen as enemies, but further research has shown that they go hand-in-hand. Now more than ever, it is not nature vs. nurture but as nature through nurture. According to Charlesworth, it is up to teachers and caregivers to observe behaviors. Once the teachers and parents do, they can create an environment that can help meet the child’s needs. How do nature and nurture contribute to development? Explain. When it comes to nature, the environment can have effects as early as prenatal development. If a mother has poor nutrition, there a chance of stillbirth, neonatal death, and low birth weight (Charlesworth, p. 109). There are three classifications that the environment can affect the fetus. Most will underestimate the fetus, only to their surprise, a fetus can use up to four of its senses. They can hear, smell, see and touch when they are born (Charlesworth, p. 125). Also, temperament is an environmental factor that can affect a child from the beginning of birth. Reference List:Charlesworth, R. (2017). Understanding Child Development. Cengage Learning.
