If I were in a situation where I had a peer who wasn’t citing information correctly, I would feel that I needed to find out why they weren’t first of all and what was going on. The solution might be something as simple as them not knowing how to do it correctly. It would be so easy to show them how. You never want to just jump to a conclusion that somebody is doing something with ill intent. If this wasn’t the problem and it was that they felt it was stupid or a waste of time, I would explain to them that it is important to cite sources because first, it can be illegal to take credit for somebody else’s work and it completely diminishes your credibility if you are lying and taking credit for somebody else’s work. Not only will this diminish your own credibility, but it will also diminish that of the University you are attending and even the profession of nursing. Citing your source tells where the idea is coming from and distinguishes your ideas from somebody else’s (Masic, 2013). Nursing, as compared to all other professions, ranks the top in ethical standards. Nursing is the number-one trusted profession (Cipriano, 2016). If we don’t continue down the path of honesty, at the basic level (nursing school) the credibility of nursing as a profession will be diminished. The values of honesty and integrity are things that cannot be taught overnight. But if from day one it is taught that those values are not only the expectations, but the rules, and just how important those values are, nursing will continue to be the highest ethical profession there is.

Based on the scenario, I would first share with my classmate about ethics in research since it is unethical to use someone’s work without acknowledging it, even if it would go unnoticed. I would also remind the classmate of the implications it would have if detected, as the University has strict rules against plagiarism. Besides, in this era of technological advancement, there are sophisticated online tools that can easily be used to check if someone’s work is plagiarized. Failing to cite or citing sources incorrectly amounts to plagiarism, which can have negative impacts on an individual’s integrity and credibility. With eroded integrity, a profession is seen in a bad light, too, a thing that could be avoided by avoiding plagiarism (Carter et al., 2019). However, what is more than avoiding plagiarism, is clinging to honesty and morality.

According to Gallup (2020), nurses received the highest rating for honesty and ethics. We must maintain the trust of the public as they trust our profession. As nurses, we cannot be honest in only certain aspects while dishonest in others. We must be as authentic backstage, just as we are onstage. It is never a good idea to make ethical exceptions in the small things, even if we uphold morality in the major things. Allowing wrong in the minor things will inevitably cause wrong in the major things; sin escalates. If we start doing evil in even minimal amounts, the foundation of integrity within our hearts becomes shaken; it will lead us down a path of temptation, where doing evil in large amounts becomes all the more enticing over time. For that reason, to keep the integrity of our actions and our profession, one must start at the heart. Conviction is a powerful thing, as it keeps us in check. Conviction comes from principle, and more importantly from God. Hence, having a righteous character should illuminate from every part of our being, doing what is right to the best of our abilities. Nobody is perfect, but if we try our best to do good where we can and when we can, it truly makes a big difference, and favor is found in the eyes of God.

Tonianette:

If I was taking a class and one of my classmates shared their project draft with me, I would try to help them by gently pointing out any spelling, grammatical mistakes, citation mistakes or improper punctuations. I am a firm believer in giving people the benefit of the doubt. Sadly, if they responded to my offerings with negative feedback, then I would attempt one more offering of another source/article that may help them. A friendly reminder of consequences that may follow by GCU, hopefully would get them to listen. Their poor attitude and a careless response are a reflection of their character; not on the university or profession. I would hope that if a classmate saw that I was doing something wrong on a project and I was comfortable in showing them my draft, that they would give me the benefit of talking to me first. As nurses, we need to hold our beliefs of honesty, ethical and moral standards, in the highest regards. Whether it be writing a paper, doing a project for research or taking care of others, our conscience, our religious and ethical beliefs, professional conduct and personal integrity, must always be highly maintained! I realize that writing can be extremely challenging, especially as an inexperienced writer; we need to help support in building these writing skills in order to grow confidence for our academic success by working diligently and honestly.
