Japan at Natures Edge Question Prompt 1 Essay

Prompt #1:

The term “anthropocentrism” refers to a “human-centered” view of the world, in which humans are unique among all other things. An anthropocentric worldview sees all elements of nature as existing to serve human needs. It proposes that humans are the most important existence in the world, and prioritizes human values (often at the expense of the natural world).

Choose one text we have read so far this quarter and discuss whether it reinforces or challenges an anthropocentric worldview. In either case, show your reader how it does so. Be sure to include textual examples as evidence of your argument.

Some things to consider: Characterization of humans and nonhumans; narrative perspective; use or lack of anthropomorphism; implications of ideologies structuring the view of nature in the text (i.e. evolution, ecology, religious and/or political thought)
