BU Feminist Values Discussion
Pick a song or other piece of music that you believe represents feminist values. It may be in any genre or style. It need not be written by or performed by a woman. In your post, explain why you think it is a feminist statement. If you are writing about a work of Western music, you should relate it to at least one of the “waves” of feminism we discussed in class on October 7. It may engage with ideas from multiple. It’s also possible that the wave of feminism does not correspond with the time the song was composed. If you’re discussing a non-Western piece (e.g., K-pop), it may not make sense to relate it to one of the waves of feminism I discussed because these waves correspond to the progress of feminism in the West. In this case, just explain why you think the song represents a positive message about women. If you can relate the song to political and social movements in its country of origin, that would be great.
Because of the nature of this prompt, I realize that most posts will focus on the lyrics. I also encourage you to employ some of the musical terminology you learned at the beginning of this course, but make sure that you relate your musical discussion to feminism. You may also wish to discuss the imagery of the original music video, but this is not required. Do NOT look up other discussions of your piece, either in scholarly sources or online. I do not want to read quotations or paraphrases of other people’s ideas. I want to read your own thoughts about the piece you picked.
